General Purpose

The Principal is central to the viability of a school.  Michigan City Area Schools is looking for a leader for Michigan City High School who will be able to build on the work of current faculty and administration in the following areas:

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Administers and coordinates curriculum and instruction
  • Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.
  • Promotes and models cultural competencies and equity through leadership and professional development activities.
  • Supervises and evaluates programs and activities
  • Maintains active relationships with student and parents
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
  • Develops and implements effective school/community relationships
  • Supervises the evaluation of the teaching and secretarial staff in the management of the school building and facilities.
  • Establishes goals and objectives
  • Works with various members of the central administrative staff on school problems of more than in-school import, such as transportation and special services
  • Prepares and conducts staff development activities
  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures
  • Makes recommendations concerning the school’s administration and instruction
  • Supervises the maintenance of all required building records and reports
  • Keeps supervisor informed of events and activities of an unusual nature as well as routine matters related to the supervisor’s accountability
  • Interprets and enforces district policies and administrative regulations
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective working environment.
  • Lead others in setting and achieving a strategic direction that recognizes current strengths and weaknesses and is internally and externally coherent
  • Provide instructional leadership that utilizes a variety of data sources and recognizes the complexity and centrality of teaching and learning
  • Build and maintain a quality team by understanding current team staff and opportunities for improvement
  • Create and nurture a positive, supportive and inclusive school climate
  • Experience in establishing  a community of trust and creating the systems and structures necessary for relationship building
  • Manage operations and resources effectively


Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Meet school administration and state requirements of Michigan City Area Schools and State of Indiana
  • Possess or be eligible for Indiana certification
  • Relevant teaching or student teaching experience
