353 Assistant Director of Special Education

Reports to:   Director of Special Education

 Specific Task Area:  Instructional Leadership

  • Works with Director of Special Education and other stakeholders to establish a district-wide philosophy of least restrictive environment for serving special needs students and communicates it to school administration, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Assists the director on all matters relating to the organization, conduct, and staff of all special education service delivery
  •  Works with staff to modify expectations and select appropriate activities, curricula and activities for individual special needs students.
  • Assists in recruiting, screening, and interviewing special education staff.
  • Works with the administration to recommend retention and assignment for employees assigned to the special education area.
  • Provides input to principals for conducting special education staff evaluations.
  • Conducts special education meetings and training to keep staff knowledgeable about policy changes, new programs, current best practices, and other pertinent information regarding special education.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with parents, staff, students, administration and the Board of Trustees regarding special education.
  • Incorporates delivery of differentiated curriculum and instructional practices within the educational program for special education.
  • Assists the schools in developing school improvement plans that incorporate special needs students.
  • Supports building on implementing inclusive environments.
  • Provides input into professional development.  Completes evaluations of special education staff as designated by Director of Special Education

 Specific Task Area:  Compliance and Management

  • Assists the director in the implementation and observation of all Board policies and State and Federal regulations as they apply to the special education staff and students.
  • Works with director to maintain accurate files of all past or currently served students in Special Education.
  • Attends multidisciplinary staffing, IEP conferences, Annual Reviews, Manifestation Determinations, and other meetings as needed.
  • Facilitates the processing of referrals and services.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.

Education and Experience

  • Critical thinker and problem solver
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to exercise appropriate initiative and work independently.
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Master’s degree, minimum
  • Special Education Directors License or Building Administrator License
