Organization Description

Safe Harbor is an out of school time enrichment program which inspires excellence in the leadership and academic skills of students through collaboration with families, school officials, and community partners. Safe Harbor I.N.S.P.I.R.E.S.   Safe Harbor provides an educational environment that is INCLUSIVE, engaging, holistic, and culturally responsive. Through NETWORKING with local, state wide, and national agencies  and organizations, Safe Harbor nurtures partnerships which expand the enrichment opportunities  of Michigan City students. Staff members provide emotional and developmental SUPPORT to  students and families through their commitment to social emotional development, resulting in the PERSONAL GRWTH of each student served. As a leader in INNOVATIVE enrichment  programming, Safe Harbor is dedicated to providing ongoing professional development for staff  members. Collaborative RELATIONSHIPS between the program staff, community partners,  and day school staff result in a dynamic EDUCATIONAL experience incorporating real world  context with conceptual learning. Safe Harbor ensures SAFETY for students and peace of mind  for families while providing top tier experiential and enrichment opportunities in the afterschool  hours/out of school time hours.

Basis Responsibilities

  • Exhibit an understanding of Safe Harbor procedures and goals.
  • Maintain an inviting, safe, orderly environment.
  • Be responsible for classroom management and student discipline.
  • Be responsible for maintenance of area.
  • Know emergency procedures.

Specific Duties

  • Monitor and open door; sign-in students for AM Safe Harbor (these duties are not to be assigned to students).
  • Monitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, etc.
  • Supervise bathroom breaks.
  • Provide staff-supervised, activities such as games, 
  • Storytime, coloring, cartoons, small projects, youth appropriate TV viewing (G rated) and Minds-In-Motion Maze activities
  • Provide recreation activities in the gym, if available or outside if weather permits and appropriate staffing is available.
  • Make proper use of Disciplinary Referral forms when necessary.
  • Maintain good communication with the Site Coordinator.
  • Collection of AM payments, and recording AM census (any issues regarding payments are the responsibility of the Site Coordinator).
  • Maintain communication log for the Safe Harbor Coordinator i.e. special notes about student issues that affect school day or after school such as toileting accidents, parent communication issues, a sick child, AM needs and supplies.  If there are pressing issues that will affect day school contact Site Coordinator / Safe Harbor Administration immediately.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Excellent record in previous employment.
  • Annual TB test and criminal background check, drug test, CPR/First Aid, Abuse Training
  • Previous experience working with children a necessity.

 Payment Type:                  Hourly, no benefits, grant-funded
